Where the Pandas Dwell

Since the topic of San Diego Zoo has come up very often in our conversations (ahem, thanks Jess!), I figured I would write about it and show you some pictures. My friends and I initially went to San Diego last summer (June 2011) for a retreat at the University of San Diego. Five of us went and we took 3 separate flights – Yea, we’re efficient like that. On top of that, 2 of us got “lost” in the complicated webs of US airports and connecting flights. With frantic phone calls from parents and trying to coordinate airport pick-ups – it was a fun evening, let me tell you.

All that aside, we decided to hit the zoo on our last day. Now, I didn’t know that San Diego Zoo is world famous and I also didn’t know that it has PANDAS! In fact, as Wikipedia tells me, it is one of the FOUR zoos in the US that have the giant pandas on display and is the most successful in terms of pandas reproduction! How about that?!

By the way, have you seen that Youtube video of sneezing baby panda? It never fails to make me laugh out loud.

With approximately 3,700 animals of 650 species and a size covering 100 acres of land, it was very easy to spend an entire day wandering around and marveling at how awesome these animals are. For those who are too lazy tire easily, they offer a bus service (express or guided) that can take you from one point to another at no additional charge.

We had a perfect day to go to the zoo. The sun was shining, the temperature was just right (not too hot, but not too cold), and the animals were prowling around their cages.

Tell me, how often do you see a bear walking around? Well, not very often, at least for me. Prior to San Diego Zoo, every time I visit a bear cage, its occupants are always sprawled on a rock, SLEEPING! Sweet life, huh?

Or have you ever seen a stretching flamingo? Exactly! Mind = blown.

Or a peacock walking freely and masquerading his tail to attract any potential suitor?

Or an AWAKE KOALA? Those two words right there should not even be in the same sentence!

And finally, the stars of the zoo! World, meet ridiculously cute pandas!

Aren’t they adorable?

And to prove its sustainability, the zoo gift shop also offers Poopoopaper – made 100% from pandas’ poo!

If you ever find yourself in San Diego, make sure to add the zoo to your list of places to visit! It is located in Balboa Park, so it is very accessible by public transit. I’m sure you’ll have lots of fun, regardless of your affinity to animals! They even have OUTDOOR ESCALATORS to help you go up those steep hills! Your 1-day admission ticket gives you the unlimited use of the guided-tour bus, express bus, and the Skyfari Aerial Tram (i.e. cable car ride!). Needless to say, I was very impressed. Can’t you tell?

Oh and we also bought a bag of caramel corns. It was the best $5 I’ve ever spent as I have yet to taste anything as good as those ones. No, Kernels’ doesn’t even compare!

All in all, it was an awesome day at the zoo.
